VOLUNTEER FROM AFAR
If youβre not in LA but want to help, there are many ways to contribute meaningfully from where you are. Hereβs how to:
Tips shared by Juliet Diaz, comrade in New Jersey
- Contact Drop-Off Centers and Mutual Aid Groups
Reach out to organizations/groups on the ground to ask what they need most. Think of skills or resources you can offer remotely, and let them know youβre available to help. This could range from donations to administrative support. Consider dedicating a few hours a day. (Ex: make phone calls and reply to voicemails from individuals seeking assistance, answer emails to lighten the load for the on-site volunteers) - Share Resources and Spread Awareness
Use your platform to amplify calls for donations, volunteer opportunities, or supply needs from verified LA-based mutual aid groups. Even if you canβt contribute financially, your reach can connect others to these vital efforts. - Coordinate Supply Drives Locally
Organize a supply drive in your area, focusing on items most needed in LA, such as non-perishable food, clothing, blankets, or hygiene products. Partner with local businesses or community centers to gather supplies, then arrange to ship them to LA-based organizations. - Offer Virtual Support
If you have specialized skills, such as graphic design, marketing, or administrative experience, reach out to mutual aid groups to see how you can assist. Many need help with creating flyers, managing social media, or organizing fundraising campaigns.Every small effort helps. Whether youβre volunteering your time, amplifying voices, or contributing funds, your support can create a ripple effect of positive change.

Lung Protection from Toxic Smoke & Dust
If you are in an Evacuated Zone: Boil all water before drinking
- Stay Indoors as Much As Possible & Do NOT Run Outdoors
- ALWAYS Wear a Mask Outdoors (PM95/K95/N95,P100)
- We cannot stress this enough. The sky might be blue, but the air is NOT clean yet. Many community members & local doctors have warned not to trust any AQI or Air Quality app. It does not calculate the toxic chemicals in the air released from burned houses, paints, plastics, batteries, etc. Inhaling excessive toxins can lead to cancer, strokes, infections, lung conditions, heart diseases, reproductive issues, and more.
- Purchase a Portable Air Purifier with a HEPA Filter
- Put it in the room you use most during the day, then move it to your bedroom at night. If the smoke gets really bad, put it in the room of your choice and stay there as much as possible.
- If you live with someone, consider designating a "Safe Room" for house members to primarily stay in and seal up all bedroom doors with a towel at the bottom.
- DIY an Air Purifier for under $100
- Clean Your Lungs with Herbal Remedies
- Supplements to Take After Wildfire

Prepare Yourself, Family & Home
Whether you need to evacuate now or not, if you live in a flagged risk area, it's widely recommended to prepare yourself in case you need to leave. The winds can change at any time. Do NOT wait for an evacuation order to prepare.

Volunteer Tips
- Be a self starter. No one knows what to do. Just get into someone's flow, help them, and figure it out from there.
- Bring your own sharpie & masking tape roll if you're going to a place that takes donations. They'll come in handy when labeling/packing up boxes.
- Learn the names of the volunteers working around you because clear communication is necessary. You might even make a new friend π

We hope more people near and far wake up, take stock, take charge, and make change. It's abundantly clear elected officials and institutional powers cannot distribute the relief we need. We simply cannot afford to live individual lives anymore. It's time to shift how we operate as neighbors, friend circles, community networks, towns and cities, and build stronger communities. The climate crisis does not discriminate.
