Balancing the Great Forces of History | CC Dispatch #9

2025 is here and it’s already been quite a start. Since we’ve been on holiday, we decided to let others do the talking for most of this newsletter instead of writing it all ourselves. Along with the usual calls-to-action and news headlines, we have a curated collection of links to help you transition into the new year. We hope you enjoy this read!

Easy Actions to Take

Why: The Associated Press has reported the capture of Dr. Abu Safiya, the head of Kamal Adwan Hospital, by saying that he was associated with Hamas despite Israel providing no evidence to this claim. Doing so validates the Israeli narrative and justifies the destruction of all hospitals in the north of Gaza.

Why: Biden has informed Congress of another $8 Billion weapons sale to Israel, likely his last act as President, just as Israel attacks clearly marked humanitarian aid vehicles. Such an act is a clear violation of Leahy Law which forbids the US from selling weapons to countries who violate human rights.

Little Wins for The People

Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) President asks French troops to Leave Country
Why It Matters: Ivory Coast officially gained independence from French colonial rule in 1960, but France has maintained a military presence for decades, with hundreds of soldiers still stationed in the country today. This follows the expulsion of French troops from several other African nations in recent months: Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal and Chad. Of Africa's former French colonies, only Djibouti and Gabon will continue to host French forces.

Sky News Updates headline following Letter-Writing Campaign
Why it Matters: Sending emails and letters can feel pointless sometimes so it’s important to see our impact. Accountable Media and Unmute Humanity ran a letter writing campaign against Sky News for their misleading coverage of babies freezing to death in Gaza which resulted in Sky News altering their headline after over 3000 letters. This is why sustained pressure matters!

We can't just hope for a brighter day, we have to work for a brighter day. Love too often gets buried in a world of hurt and fear. And we have to work to dig it out so we can share it with our family, our friends, and our neighbors. -Dolly Parton

What Should Leaders Learn From History?

Connecting the Dots

It's often said that in order to know where to go, we have to know where we have been. 2025, and the next few years in general, will be a time of momentous change and conflict. Throughout it all, many people will appear who want to lead us through it. This is a great talk by Professor Roy Casagranda that explores what kind of thinking we should expect from would-be leaders and the two great opposing forces throughout all history.

The People's Dictionary: Dead Internet Theory

Dead Internet Theory is the idea that most of the content on the internet will eventually be created by bots or generated by AI, rather than real people. With AI becoming more and more prevalent in our lives, and Mark Zuckerberg announcing the rollout of fake AI influencers on Instagram and Facebook, it seems the Dead Internet Theory is proving true. The only way to prevent this is with our wallets and our loud rejection of AI being used to blur the lines between the real and digital.

While we try to focus on lesser-known artist and projects, it’s important to recognize when large artist are using their platform for good too.
